Mattress Cleaning Service Cost: What Pros Charge and What You Can Do at Home

I found the stain while flipping the guest mattress for my mother-in-law’s visit. Yellowish, about the size of a dinner plate, right where a pillow would sit. Nobody in our house would admit to it, and the mattress is only six years old.

So I did what I always do before spending money: I called around. I wanted to know the real mattress cleaning service cost for a queen, what a technician does in that hour, and whether my own spray bottle and baking soda could get close. I got three quotes, booked one, and cleaned our own bed myself the same weekend to compare. The prices and what I’d do again are all below.

What a mattress cleaning service costs

The three quotes I got for one queen mattress, all in our area:

  • The carpet company that did our floors in August: $165 for the mattress alone, or $129 if I added it to a carpet cleaning visit.
  • A one-man upholstery business: $110, with a $25 trip charge on top because we’re outside his usual zone.
  • A national chain’s online form: “starting at $99,” which turned into $189 on the phone once I mentioned the stain and asked for the sanitizing treatment.

Those line up with the national picture. Homewyse’s cost estimate for September 2026 puts professional mattress cleaning at roughly $148 to $180 per mattress as a national average, before your zip code moves it up or down.

What pushed my quotes around was the same every time. Size matters a little (a twin is cheaper than a king). Stains matter more. And extras like deodorizing, “sanitizing,” or allergen treatment can add $30 to $60 each, which is how a $99 ad becomes a $189 bill.

What you’re paying for in that hour

I watched the technician work on our guest mattress, because I wanted to see what $129 bought. My house cleaning prices notes taught me that a quote means little until you know what’s in the visit. He was there 50 minutes.

  1. A slow vacuum of the whole top and sides with a hand tool that had stronger suction than anything I own.
  2. An enzyme spray on the stain, left to sit for about ten minutes.
  3. A low-moisture extraction pass: a wand that sprays a little warm solution and sucks it right back up. He was careful to keep the mattress from getting soaked.
  4. A second, slower pass on the stain only.
  5. A fan pointed at the bed, and instructions to leave the sheets off for six hours.

The stain went from yellow to a faint shadow you only see if you look for it. He told me straight away it wouldn’t vanish completely because it was old and had soaked into the padding. I liked that he said it up front.

Mattress cleaning service cost vs. doing it yourself

Our own king mattress got the DIY version that Saturday. I spent about $14: a box of baking soda, and a bottle of enzyme cleaner I already keep under the sink for spills. It took me roughly 20 minutes of work and most of a day of waiting.

Problem on the mattress DIY at home Worth paying a pro? What it cost me
General freshness, dust, skin flakes Vacuum slowly, baking soda for a few hours, vacuum again No About $3
Fresh spill (coffee, juice) Blot, enzyme spray, blot, dry with a fan No, if you catch it the same day Cleaner I already had
Old sweat or body-oil stain Lightens a little at best Yes, this is where extraction earns its price $129 (bundled)
Urine from a kid or pet Enzyme cleaner, then a long dry Yes if it soaked in or still smells after a week Not needed this time
Suspected bed bugs Don’t try to clean it away Call pest control, not a cleaner –

The baking soda round made our bed smell noticeably fresher. It did nothing for the faint sweat outline on my side, which I’d been ignoring for a couple of years. My split now: DIY for freshness, a pro for set-in stains.

How I clean a mattress at home between pro visits

This is my routine now, twice a year, on the same weekend I flip the bedroom for the season:

  1. Strip everything and wash it hot. The EPA’s asthma guidance says dust mites live in mattresses, pillows and bedding, and recommends washing bedding in hot water once a week and using dust-proof covers on pillows and mattresses.
  2. Vacuum the mattress top and sides with the upholstery tool. Slowly. Go over the seams twice.
  3. Spot-treat anything new with enzyme cleaner. Blot, don’t scrub, and use as little liquid as you can.
  4. Sift a thin layer of baking soda over the top and open the windows. I leave it until late afternoon.
  5. Vacuum it all up, then put a zippered cover on before the sheets go back.

That last step is the one that saves money. Since we put a $40 waterproof cover on the guest bed, I don’t expect to book another mattress cleaning service for years. If you’re already planning a bigger fall clean, these steps slot right into the bedroom section of my deep cleaning checklist.

When to book a pro (and when to skip it)

I’d pay for a mattress cleaning again for an old stain, a smell that comes back after a DIY round, or a mattress that’s going to someone else, like a guest bed before company or a crib mattress before the next baby.

I wouldn’t pay for “routine sanitizing” on a clean mattress with a cover on it. And I wouldn’t call a cleaner for bed bugs at all. The EPA’s bed bug guide points to sealed encasements that trap the bugs inside and to pest professionals for an infestation. A cleaning visit won’t fix that, and it might spread them to the van.

If you’re also thinking about the floors, the cheapest move is bundling. My carpet cleaning cost breakdown has the full quote from the same company, and the mattress add-on saved me $36 compared to booking it alone. Same idea with sofas: my couch cleaning cost notes show how much the per-piece price drops once a technician is already in your house.

Three mistakes that raise your mattress cleaning service cost

  • Booking from the “starting at” price. Mention every stain and every extra you want on the phone, and ask for the total. My $99 quote became $189 once I did.
  • Booking it alone. The trip is a big part of the price. Add the mattress to a carpet or upholstery visit and it usually costs less.
  • Putting sheets back too soon. A damp mattress under a fitted sheet can smell musty within days. Give it the full drying time with a fan running.

What didn’t work for me

Before I called anyone, I tried a viral trick on the guest mattress stain: hydrogen peroxide, dish soap and baking soda mixed into a paste. I left it on too long, used way too much, and the spot stayed damp for two days. It lightened the center of the stain and left a darker ring around it, which looked worse than what I started with. The technician said rings like that are common when too much liquid gets into the padding, and it took him an extra pass to blend it out.

I also bought a $30 handheld “UV sanitizing” wand online. I used it once. I have no idea if it did anything, and it’s in the donate box now.

FAQ

How much does a mattress cleaning service cost?

My three quotes for a queen ranged from $110 plus a $25 trip fee to $189 with a stain treatment. Homewyse’s September 2026 national estimate is about $148 to $180 per mattress. Adding it to a carpet cleaning visit brought mine down to $129.

How long does a mattress take to dry after professional cleaning?

Our technician used a low-moisture method and told us six hours with a fan running and the sheets off. It was dry to the touch in about four. If someone soaks the mattress, expect much longer.

How often should you get a mattress professionally cleaned?

Only when it needs it. With a zippered cover, weekly hot washes of the bedding, and a vacuum and baking soda round twice a year, most mattresses can go years between pro cleanings. Stains and smells are the signal.

If you’re staring at a mattress stain this week, start with the twenty-minute baking soda round. If the stain is still there tomorrow, that’s when a mattress cleaning service is worth the call. Get the total price on the phone, and ask if they’ll knock it down when you bundle it with the carpets.
