My grandmother moved out of a five-room house and into a one-bedroom apartment on a Saturday in February, and by four o’clock that afternoon her sofa was standing on its end in a hallway because nobody had measured the turn.
We had spent three weekends deciding what she would keep. Photographs, the good china, the sewing table, my grandfather’s barometer. What we never measured was the apartment itself, which is the one piece of information that decides everything else, and there is a whole profession, senior move services, built around that gap. I know because we did her move without one, and then hired one to quote my mother’s.
So we ran the whole thing on effort instead of information. The effort is the part that cost her.
What senior move services actually do that a moving company does not
A moving company prices your stuff and carries it. That work is real and it is skilled, and I have written about what it costs over on low cost moving companies, so I am not repeating quote mechanics here.
Senior move services sit one step upstream. The National Association of Senior Move Managers, the trade body for the field, describes it as “the profession that assists older adults, individuals, and families with downsizing, relocation or simplifying their homes,” and its published list of what members do includes a line that took me a while to appreciate: customized floor plans.
That is the product. Somebody measures the new place, measures your furniture, and tells you what physically fits before anyone opens a conversation about what you love.
The rest of the service wraps around that. Sorting alongside the person moving. Arranging the sale or donation of what stays behind. Scheduling and supervising the movers. Unpacking on the other end so the kitchen works the first night. Some firms do all of it in-house and some coordinate vendors, which is a question worth asking early because it changes the bill.
One line on that same page reset my thinking more than anything else I read: these firms “frequently assist individuals who choose to stay in their own homes.” A good one will tell you the move is unnecessary. I had not considered that something anyone sold.
The measurement that should have happened before a single box
We started with her things, in her house, and asked her what she wanted to bring. That was the mistake, and it took me until March to see the shape of it.
That question puts a woman in her own living room and asks her to volunteer which parts of her life she is willing to give up, with no information about what the alternative even is. Every answer costs her something.
Measure the new place first and you get a question about a wall instead.
Her new bedroom had one clear stretch of wall, 92 inches, before it ran into a window. Her bed was 60 inches wide and her two nightstands were 22 inches each, which is 104. That is 12 inches of arithmetic, and when we finally did the sum in March she looked at the number and said “well, the one with the drawer, then,” in about four seconds.
Three weekends of careful, exhausting conversation had not gotten us there. A tape measure did. Senior move services start there, which is what you are paying them for. I keep coming back to that, because the emotional labor we were all bracing for turned out to be mostly a data problem we had refused to solve.
The order is what matters. Measure the destination, then sort. Doing it the other way around is what makes downsizing feel like a stripping-away, and I put my grandmother through three weeks of it.

What senior move services cost, and how the hours are billed
I called three senior move services in March about my mother’s move, which has not happened yet, so treat these as quotes I was given and not as a national average.
All three billed by time. None of them quoted a flat price for the whole job on a first call, and the one that came closest was upfront that the number would move once she walked the house.
- Firm A: $85 an hour for a two-person team, four-hour minimum. Her walkthrough estimate was 22 hours, so about $1,870, with the movers and the truck billed separately.
- Firm B: $65 an hour per person, and she staffs three, so $195 an hour in practice. Estimate of 14 hours came to $2,730. The floor plan and the unpack were both included.
- Firm C: package pricing. $950 for the floor plan, the sort, and the disposal coordination. $1,700 if you add packing and full setup at the new place.
Firm B charged the most per hour and came second cheapest overall, because three people finish a room in a third of the time and the clock is what you are buying. I would not have worked that out from the hourly rates on their websites, and it is the reason I stopped comparing rates and started asking for crew size plus estimated hours.
The other thing to pin down on the first call is what the fee leaves out. In all three quotes, the truck was its own vendor with its own invoice, and packing materials were billed at cost. If you want the packing handled as a separate line, packing services price that on their own terms and the two bills are easy to double-count.
Where the things that did not fit ended up
My grandmother’s apartment absorbed maybe a third of her house. The other two-thirds had to go somewhere, and this is the part nobody schedules.
Some of it was easy. Two of her grandchildren were setting up first apartments and took the everyday dishes, a bookcase and the spare bed between them. Her church took the linens. The dining table went to my sister, who has the room for it and eats at it, which my grandmother mentions roughly every time she visits.
The china cabinet is the one I think about. It was 54 inches wide and 78 tall, and there was no wall in the apartment that could hold it without blocking a window or a door. It stayed behind. The china came out, went into a box, and now lives in my mother’s sideboard, and my grandmother still sets four places from it at Christmas.
What we did badly was the middle category, the maybes. We left them in the house, which turned into its own project six weeks later when the house had to be cleared for sale, and I have written all of that up in estate cleanout services. Senior move services fold the disposal into the same job. We paid twice for one decision because we deferred it.
How to vet senior move services before you sign anything
Senior move services carry no federal license, so the vetting falls to you. Four things I would check, in the order I would check them.
Ask who is going to be in the house. Employees or subcontractors, how many, and whether the person who quoted the job is the person who shows up. That one question explained most of the price differences I saw.
Ask them to send the insurance certificate as an attachment. General liability and workers’ compensation. Any established firm has it ready and will not be annoyed by the request.
Then separate the mover from the manager, because the truck is usually a different company carrying its own accountability. The ATA Moving & Storage Conference, which calls itself “the leading national organization representing household goods moving companies,” runs a directory of members in good standing, and cross-checking a recommended mover there takes a minute.
Last, ask how the sort runs on the day. Who holds the object, who asks the question, and what happens when the answer is “I need to think about it.” The firm I liked best answered without hesitating: the maybes go in a labeled box that travels to the new place and gets opened in six weeks. She had clearly been asked before.
The soft signal I would not ignore is whether they talk to the person moving or to you. Two of the three consultations were addressed to me while my mother sat in the same room. That tells you how the work day is going to feel.
What I would do differently for my mother’s move
My mother is not moving yet. She has been working through her own house on slow Saturdays for months, and the way that conversation has to be handled is its own subject, which I covered in decluttering tips for seniors.
When it does happen, three things change. We book the floor plan visit before we book anything else, even if the move is a year out. We hire the sort, because the person who cannot physically lift the boxes and the person who cannot emotionally decide about them are the only two people in my family, and paying a third party to stand between us is cheaper than what the alternative costs. And the disposal gets contracted in the same agreement, on the same week, so there is no house full of maybes waiting for us in six weeks.
Senior move services would have caught all three of those, and that is most of what I would be paying for. The truck was never the hard part, which took me one bad February to learn. If you are earlier in this than I was, the general version of the sequence is in decluttering before a move.

This is the table we should have built in January and built in March instead. Every piece in it was already on her keep list before we measured.

Three mistakes I made in February
- We sorted before we measured. Two full weekends went into deciding the emotional fate of furniture that was never going to fit through the bedroom doorway. That time was spent, and it cost her more than it cost me.
- We treated moving day as the deadline. The date that mattered was the day the building would let us in with a tape measure, and I never asked for it. It was available five weeks ahead.
- We packed her kitchen the way we pack ours. Everything went into logical groups that made sense to two women in their thirties. She could not find her own colander for most of a month, and she did not tell us for three weeks.

Do I need a senior move manager, or are movers enough?
If the new place is a similar size and the person moving is doing their own deciding, movers are enough. The case for a manager is a real downsize, where a five-room house has to become a one-bedroom and somebody has to work out what fits before anyone gets asked to give something up. That planning is the product senior move services sell, and it is what we skipped.
What happens to everything that does not fit?
Family first, if anyone is setting up a home and will use it. Then donation for the things with more use than resale value, which is most of a house. Consignment or an estate sale is worth the effort for a short list of items, and a manager will usually tell you honestly how short that list is. Contract the leftovers into the same agreement as the move, on the same week. Leaving the maybes in the house is how one job quietly turns into two.
Whether or not you hire senior move services, do the boring thing first if you are at the start of this. Call the new building and ask when you can come in with a tape measure, then write down the length of every clear wall and the width of every doorway before anyone opens a single cupboard. My grandmother’s sofa cleared its wall by three inches, and we spent a weekend arguing about whether to keep it. The tape would have taken ten minutes.
